10/16/09 – Accepted into the SESAC Organization

Phil has been accepted into the SESAC performance rights organization (PRO). SESAC is the smallest of the three PROs in the U.S., but is the most selective and is known for establishing personal relationships with their writers and publishers. They will not only handle performance royalties, but will help propel Phil’s musical career to the next level.

A brief history of SESAC: SESAC (originally the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers) was founded in 1930 to help European publishers with their American performance royalties. Since then, SESAC has expanded to include an international reach songwriters, composers, and publishers of all genres. SESAC is the fastest growing and most technologically adept of the three PROs in the U.S. (the others being ASCAP and BMI). Some of SESAC’s affiliates include Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, and Robert Johnson.

Unlike ASCAP and BMI, SESAC has a selection process. After Phil submitted some of his songs and lyrics for consideration, a panel reviewed his submission and then a representative called a couple of weeks later to say that SESAC was interested. Phil was also considering BMI, but decided to affiliate with SESAC because of their accessibility and more personal relationships with their affiliates. In addition to tracking royalties, SESAC also sponsors industry showcases for their affiliates and helps with promotions, co-branding, and making connections. Finally, Phil’s rep will also help him present his songs to other artists, such as Keith Urban or Rascal Flatts.
